International Symposium on Fusion of Nano and Bio Technologies (FNB2003) was held in Tsukuba International Congress Center. There were 19 presentations and 49 poster announcements with about 2002 participants.
As a keynote lecture, ScD Allan S. Hoffman, Med. Center of Univ. of Washington, gave a presentation on polymer nano particle entitled “Smart Nano-Sized Bio molecular Systems” and Masuo Aizawa, the president of Tokyo Inst't of Tech. gave a presentation on cellular and bio molecular devices entitled “Bio/Nanotechnology for Molecular and Cellular Biodevices”.
At the presentations, most advanced research results were shared such as corneal reproduction in system engineering, unimolecular observation of protein membrane and DNA computer etc. The discussion went from diversified viewpoints of biology, medical, engineering to information science.
1 min. poster preview by poster presenters were highly regarded. At the poster session, participants discussed lively. At the end of the symposium, FNB 2003 Poster Award was announced and Best Poster Award went to “Nano-Scale Thick-patterned Thermo-Responsive Surfaces for Pattern Co-Cultured Cell Sheet Engineering” which high polymer chemistry/micro fabrication technology and cell technology were fused together. We expect Nano Biotechnology aiming for the use of medical application and cell/system engineering fuse together.

The 4th France-Japan Workshop on Nanomaterials was held in Toshi Centre Hotel from March 3rd to 5th.
In order to promote and share the research results, the fore front researchers of Nanomaterials in Japan and France presented the latest research developments. The workshops are held alternately between the two countries. In this 4th workshop, about 70 participants attended.
The workshop was divided into 5 sessions with a distribution of over 31 presentations (14 from Japan, 17 from France). These sessions were:
(1) Nanoparticles, clusters and properties, (2) Nanostructured thin firms, (3) Nanostructured metals, glasses and applications, (4) Nanotubes and nanoscopic measurements, (5) Molecular electronics, quantum dots and calculations.
The sessions went wide-ranged fields of application from electronics, environment to structural application. The latest research results were lively and widely exchanged.
President Kishi, NIMS, provided national interests and efforts in nanotechnology research. French researchers showed their interests in “Nanotechnology Support Project” that started in FY 2002, and if the research facilities provided in the project are allowed to use by outside researchers.
In final discussion, the collaboration between two countries and the next theme of the workshop were discussed. France suggested the exchange of young researchers and the both countries will have a discussion for giving shape to the plan.
All the participants stayed in the same hotel during the workshop and discussed face to face. It has made it possible to strengthen mutual cooperation between two countries and build researchers' network.
