We investigated the structure of the elytra of several species of Carabus and Coleoptera. Some members of this species are unable to fly and we took cross sections of the elytra to see similarities and differences between the flying and non-flying members. The specimen were collected in Okinawa, Honshu and Hokkaido. The crossections were performed by freezing in liquid nitrogen and either cutting with a surgical knife or fractured. It was found that the non-flying species had their left and right elytra fixed with an interlocking structure. The flying species also had a structure that aligned the elytra with each other, but they could separate.
