概要(目的・用途・実施内容)/ Abstract (Aim, Use Applications and Contents)
The purpose of this experiment was to characterize the structural and compositional features of a high-entropy intermetallic catalyst, specifically Pt₁.₀Co₁.₂Ni₀.₈Sn₁.₇In₁.₃ supported on CeO₂. TEM analysis was conducted to confirm the morphology of the supported catalyst, measure the particle size distribution, and perform EDS mapping for elemental composition verification.
実験 / Experimental
Approximately 5 mg of the catalyst powder was first ground thoroughly for 5–10 minutes to ensure homogeneity. A small, undetermined fraction of the ground sample was then dispersed in approximately 2 mL of high-purity ethanol. The suspension was ultrasonicated until the catalyst particles were fully dispersed. Using a pipette, one drop of the suspension was deposited onto a carbon-coated copper grid, allowing the ethanol to evaporate naturally. This drop-casting process was repeated three times, with sufficient drying between each application. The prepared grid was then left to air-dry overnight and stored until TEM analysis was performed.
結果と考察 / Results and Discussion
TEM images showed that the catalyst particles were uniformly dispersed on the CeO₂ support, with approximately 4–5 metal alloy nanoparticles attached to each larger CeO₂ grain. The average particle size of the metallic phase was estimated to be ~1.5 nm, with a distribution ranging from 0.8 to 2.3 nm. These results confirm the supported nature of the catalyst. EDS analysis detected the presence of all five target elements (Pt, Co, Ni, Sn, and In), and the measured elemental ratios were generally consistent with the intended composition. However, due to limitations in spatial resolution and the nanoscale size of the particles, the mapping data were insufficient to evaluate the uniformity of elemental distribution. As a result, while the catalyst exhibits the expected morphology and elemental presence, the current analysis is not sufficient to confirm the formation of a high-entropy alloy phase.
