概要(目的・用途・実施内容)/ Abstract (Aim, Use Applications and Contents)

To study the degradation mechanism of cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries

実験 / Experimental

Battery electrodes are charged and discharged with different number of cycles in different electrolytes with Li counter electrodes. The Li anode and the separator are then extracted from the batteries and dissolved in acid. The amount of transition metal in the solution is measured by inductively-coupled plasma spectroscopy

結果と考察 / Results and Discussion

Transition metal dissolution is one of the degradation mechanisms of metal oxides cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries. The amount of transition metal dissolution depends on the type of electrolyte, the charge-discharge conditions and also cycle number. In this study, we found that higher transition metal is dissolved from the electrode increases with the number cycles, and also depends on the amount of cyclic carbonate in the electrolyte, suggesting side reactions between the cyclic carbonate and the material. The amount of transition metal dissolution is also higher when the cut off voltage is higher, which correlates with more parasitic reactions of the electrolyte.
